I am writing this letter to asking you if you could possibly
attend Greenford High School and give a lecture on your work and the film
making you did in ill manors. Over the past 4 months he have studied ill manors
and have looked in to the work that you have been doing and are trying to get
across to people. We have analysed your TedX lectures , bbc radio 1 interview
,soccer am and other interviews that have been conducted in magazine. In the
next 2/3 months we will be sitting our media exam which orientated around your
film ill manors. I am asking you if it would be possible for you to come to our
school and be able to carry out an lecture that can help enhance our learning
but also potentially enhance our results that we will get, we would be very
grateful if this could take place.
The BBC is a public broadcaster and there to inform, educate
and entertain its audiences, this has been done successfully with Plan B being
on Radio 1 as he has spoken about the problems he has had of being in all parts
in the film making of ill manors which was the editing, directing and making
all the music that will be in the film. Plan B talks about the problems that he
found which were that he has not been to his house in week but sleeping on the
sofa at the studio, these are examples of how BBC radio 1 had informed ,
educated and entertain there audiences. Plan B and the presented Fearne Cotton Talk
about his work and make emphasis of when the film is coming out and when his
album is coming out this helps promote his film and his album which means that
he can create customer awareness. The interview starts of by talking about plan
B being tired and sleeping in the studio the present then says “so you have
been creating tunes and then came straight here” plan b says “if you could call
a leather sofa a bed yhh” he then talks about how he had been shooting the
previous night, small shots for his film ill manors close up of mobile phones
and so on. He then talks about that he is writing the song for ill manors that didn’t
exists until last night. The show concentrate on how much hard work has gone in
from plan B and how much he had done in order to make the film what it is. Plan
B then talks about the struggles he faced with the finance and so he made his
album hoping to get money but never left ill manors until he could make it
possible, he then talks about his career as a director and that he wants to
carry on directing and continue making films. Radio 1 also play Plan B’s new
song ill manors this has been done to help promote his music but create awareness
for radio 1 audience, but also suggests that Radio 1’s audience are the type of
people that listen to plan B’s music. Plan B talks about a range of his
products such as his film , song and album which is an example of his synergy,
but is done in order to make audiences aware of what he is doing and what he
has done. BBC Radio 1 has a target audience of 15-29 year olds the radio is
aimed to provide a range of new music and to support new emerging artists
especially from the UK. The audiences that this would appeal to would appeal to
psychographics mainstreamer’s because they follow the crowd and also respond to
big established brands like BBC radio 1.

Ben drew-this is a section on the website that allows the audience to be bale to understand more about Ben drew, understanding of why he made the film but also to give information about other part of his career such as his music. Stills- the still was a section on the website that allowed audiences to be able to look at the chracters that were in the film , it has a picture of all the main character that played a part in the film which helps audiences to be able to identify them. Buy now-is another section that provide audiences to be able to buy the film either on Blu-Ray or DVD and from different places. Reactions- this is an important section on the website because it has reviews of big name people and also big name magazine which can help attract audiences to watch the film. The target audience for the Jonathan Ross show is aimed at females , hose wife and children the social demographics that this would appeal to are E,D,C2,C1 and B the psychographics this would appeal to is main streamers because they like to be part on the latest things and follow the crowds. in the interview plan B talks about the misconception of the music industry and not based around "money, ho's and gangs". Plan B talks about his music and how its different and how its there to educate people , he then talks about his school like and explains that he got kicked out school but other opportunities arised that he was able to take part in. Plan B talk about helping other by going back to his old school but helping to make the difference in his old school. Plan B talks about how teenagers are stereotyped due the media and the government does not help this, the media also do the same which means that the youth feel that they have no support. Ben does not talk about his music or his film but talk about event in his life then lead him to where he , the initial entrance speach that was provided by jonathan ross makes reference to Plan B being a writer, director and rapper.

Plan B is shown in a positive shade of light , its represented as a brand that is there to break the stereotypes and stand up for what is right. instead of being seen as a brand that talks about street culture in a positive way but in the true way and going against the fantasy.

the target audience for soccer am is males between 16-30 , the demographics that appeal to is D,C2,C1, B and A the reason for this is because they show a passion in football but also like to be educated based on research that conducted soccer AM had an audience of C1,B and A and therefore the advert of brylcreem was introduced as people in those groups take pride in the way they look. The psycographics this would appeal to are mainstreamers are they follow crowds , and are shown to respond to big established brands. another group would be reformers the reason for this is because they are open minded and social aware of what goes on which means that they would want to listen to Ben's ideology.

Plan B talks about how he struggled with making his music and that he did not know much about musical instruments but had taught him self on how to play it . he found rapping easy but singing very hard , he explains that his music is similar to the music he grew up with and the presenters talk about the release his album and talk about about the album and the music that it will have. they also talk about if Ben's audience will like his music which suggests that they are trying to appeal to audiences, Ben replies that his fans should like all his music. soccer AM talks about Plan B's acting in adulthood which was a very successful film, and also plan B talks a bit about his influences and how people spoke good things about him.

Plan B on soccer AM is promoted about his work and the music that he makes, it is more concentrated in promoting the what he did/does rather knowing about him. Soccer AM talk about his music and the release which suggests they are attracting audiences about his music but also creating awareness of it.
Based on this cover magazine the layout of the text on the left hand side of the cover the layout of the tag lines/featured stories is really eye catching and feel that by implementing that in my work could be very effective.
The tag line of "secrets" is another aspect of this magazine that i believe will attract my audience as they may want to find out more.
The use of the header i feel is good way to attract my audience by saying "official" attracts people to the magazine as they feel that what they are reading is the inside information making my audience feel valued.
The idea of the competition is another aspect of the magazine that i will implement in to my work as i feel it is an effective way to attract the audience to my magazine and my program.
cast interview is another method that has been used in this magazine cover which i will also use in my magazine, my providing inside access to my audiences means that they feel more valued but can also want them to want to find out more information about my program.

titles of publication- the title of the magazine is "Doctor who magazine" the reason for this is because doctor who is well recognised program that has a large fa base, by having the tile as doctor who gets straight to the point and attracted them to buy it.
slogan- the slogan in this magazine is "celebrating 50 years..time!" this has been added in order to attract the audience and give them a reason to buy this magazine.
central image- the central image is of the doctors across time, the use of having a image with all the doctors, means that can appeal to audiences. Having a large image means that attracts audience also because of the three characters people may recognise them and buy the magazine.
"flash"/cover lines- "The doctors past comes back to haunt him" this is an example if a good cover line because it attracts the audience to want to read more and to find out mro information. "the day of the doctor" is an example of a good cover line because ti attracts the audience of wanting to read more and know why the day has come, it is placed in the middle of the page in order to ensure the audience see it and are attracted to the magazine.
free offer- 12 free collectors anniversary art cards and also 9 downloads of doctor who audio adventures. this an example of a free offer which allows audiences to feel that they are getting value and something in return, for fans it can be seen as a factor that attracts them to buy as they may be collecting the doctor who merchandise.
colour scheme- the colour scheme of this magazine uses colour like red , black , white and gold this has been done in order to keep the colour scheme simple but also attractive , the red is very eye catching and therefore attracts the audience to the cover the red connotes blood and detective theme. the white connotes purity and also stands out against the red.
names/game check- the magazine fully based around doctor who and is the main focus of the magazine, this has been done in order to attract doctor who fans but also helps audiences establish what the magazine is about but also if it appeal to them.
language- the word "doctor" is in capitals which can attract audiences to take an interest in the magazine but also be attracted to it. The font is also another factor that can attract audiences to the magazine bold and big font can attract audiences as it is eye catching . the use of smaller font also help keep audiences attracted as it means that audiences have to get closer in order to read more about the magazine and what it is about.

as it went straight to the top of the UK album charts during its release in July
2012.
· Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What
are the main similarities and differences?
The film I choose is skyfall, the similarities are that like
any other big block buster that a premier did take place. The different is that
for ill manors the premier took place in the US at Sundance film festival and
also at the greater Manchester film festival. Whereas big block buster would do
it in Leicester square having its on spate event to promote the film.
Skyfall on the other hand da much bigger
budget of $150 - $200 million which raised in the Box office to $951,323,067,
whereas ‘Ill Manors’ budget was much less £100,000 which raised to £453,570 in
the Box office. The similarities between ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Ill manors’ are
that they both contain violence and some of the same props such as a gun, both
films connotes danger and realism however ‘Ill Manors’ is a film that
highlights lives of individuals who have been brought up in dangerous neglected
areas during childhood whereas James bond is an traditional action based film
with a hero and a villain.

One technique that I believe has been used
is enigma codes the trailer asked questions such as “what influences …. The choices
you make ?” this is helps draw the audiences because it asks rhetorical questions
that only the film can answer and therefore attracts audiences to watch the
film. The use of dialogue and text on the screen is another way that enigma codes
has been used, it uses statements that draw the audience to watch the film such
as “ we are all products of our environment , some environments are just harder
to survive in.” this is another example of enigma codes because audiences want
to know more if they can relate to it, it also makes audiences want to know
what environment but most of all attracts them to watch it due to the realism of what
is being shown. Another way is through the use of diegetic and non-diegetic
sound, the music helps attracts audiences to watch film. This has been done
through the use of Plan B song ill manors the instrumental is used halfway
through the film in order to attract audiences and but also to keep the attention
of audiences that are watching the film. The final way that the trailer attracts
audiences is through the video itself , the clips that are used have a big
impact on the audience seeing guns and drugs attracts the audience the
establishing shot of London is another factor that I believe attracts the audiences
to watch it. By seeing London and drugs and guns can be seen as a way to
attract audiences to watch the film by them wanting to find out what is
happening in the streets of London. The use of showing several character helps
introduced the audiences that can attracted them to watch the film which link
to the male and female gaze, that audiences may see someone they like which may
attract them to watch the film. The use of showing character and following the
scene with a child suggests that is a narrative of the film but a narrative of the
character as well which helps attracts audiences because they want to find out more.

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18
certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed
acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15
certificate and an 18 certificate?
A 15 certificate involves strong violence and
language but does not show a lot of any drug use is allowed however it must not
be promoted or encouraged to be taken. Any sexual context is allowed but if
sexual violence is involved it must be discreet and have a strong contextual
justification. An 18 certificate film would have very strong violence and
language which is likely to be continuous in an 18 certificate film, also
strong sexual activity/context is likely to be shown. Gruesome, strong blood
scenes and real sex, crude and explicit sex references are allowed. Overall Ill
Manors would be an 18 certificate as it contains context from an 18 certificate
such as violence, strong language and real sex references therefore would be
suitable for audiences who are 18 and above. Although Plan B had aimed for the
film to be for 15-25 years old it means that the audiences that are 18 and
above will be able to see it in cinema which means that ill manors would have
lost potential customers.
The record companies that helped with the song were 679 artists
and Atlantic records which is part of the warner music group. Plan B sold over
267,000 copies in the first week of sales which shows that his song had been a
great success. critics had a positive response to ill manors.

Media Representations: How is gender/ethnicity/age represented in the
video?
The video is an alternative representation of the music industry, plan
B is showing an alternative representation of street life. Plan be uses black
people and white people and a few people from other backgrounds this suggests
that plan B is trying to go against stereo types and this suggests that people
from all background can be part of crime not just one race. The use of using Asian
character who was Riz Ahmed, was also shown taking part in the crime taking a Nike
box of a black child. This suggests that plan B is going against stereo types
and that all people of all races can be involved in crime. The use of
stereotypes has been used in as a short hand for audiences to be able to
establish what is taking place which is medhurst’s theory. The use of shorthand
allows audiences to understand what is going on the use of young black, white
and Asian people and the way they dress suggests that they are dangerous and
can be considered as a folk devil which is part of the theory of chosen or
moral panic. Plan be talks about believe what you read in the newspaper which
suggests that plan B is going again the Cohen theory of moral panic. This suggests
that plan B is trying to change the way people think and that not to “believe” everything
in the newspapers. Another theory that
can be linked to youth being seen as folk devil is the hypodermic needle model
theory has been used by news papered the word “believe” in the lyrics suggests
that the media are injecting people with false information. The 2-step flow is
very closely linked with plan B video plan B in the video is getting his point
across and at the same time is educating people about what the government is
doing, it can be said that he is starting a revolution and helping the youth
been seen in a different light and in a more positive way.

music videos and what values does it promote?
Plan B’s music video is very diverse and different to the
typical music videos that are out there currently. Plan B does not use bright high
key lighting but use low key lighting and natural lighting in his videos. This shows
that he is standing out of the typical music video styles and starting his own
way of doing things which is out of the norm. In some ways it is typical of a
music video such as showing gangs and showing the street life but Plan B
presents it showing the truth of the streets but not promoting it as a glamour
life styles like in other music videos. This also the theory this can be linked
to is the hypodermic needle model theory by Katz, the reason for this because
Plan B believe that the media are brain washing people and only giving information
that is false but also one sided on the youth. Plan B in his lyrics says that “to
keep on believing what you read in the papers” this suggests that the media are
injecting people with false information, the word “believing” suggests that Plan
B is saying that it is not true. Another lyric that plan B used was “Think you
know how life on a council estate is, from everything you’ve ever read about it
or heard” this suggests that he is saying to his audience if you have not
experience it then u cannot judge. The music video go against stereo types but
all paints a bigger for the audience, he uses campaigns from the politics in
his lyrics and talks about the Hug a hoody campaign in a sarcastic way all the
video presents the politicians in a negative way. This is different to typical
music video his present the singer in a positive way such as nice cars , nice
house having lots of money and so on whereas as Plan B shows it how it really
is where he grew up and the truth that goes on.
• Media Audiences: Who does this text/artist appeal to and why?
I believe that the audience is not only for teenagers but
also for a range of audiences, this is because I feel that although the video
portrays the youth as being violent and in a negative way the lyrics have more
of an impact but also portrays a different and deeper message. The video can be
seen to educate people rather than just to entertain its audiences. I believe
that the audiences for this music video are based on social demographics are E,
D , C2 , C1 and B the reasons for this is because people in the B category are
willing to learn and be educated where as people in A have very strict and
tunnel vision view on the youth. Based on the lifestyle classification model by
young and Rubican the groups I feel it will appeal to are strugglers because teenagers
can be considered to be struggler and the video can be seen to educate people
so that help can be provided. Another group I believe is reformers because they
are people who like to have social awareness and have value for time and
judgment.
