parallel and contrapuntal sound- Indiana Jones

Feedback from Mr Halsey-

What went well ?

  • Brilliant choice of music.
  • contrapuntal images were consistent until the sixth image .
  • parallel images very movie driven , fits the cinematic feel , adventure genre.
Even better if?
  • proof reading.
  • image of brides maid stood out and pictures are no longer consistent
  • did images need titles as audience should be able to establish what's contrapuntal and what's parallel.
My feedback-
  • I have used a continuous theme throughout the video and should have kept it the same I changed the images as I felt that I should allow my audience to understand that there is a range of images that could have had a contrapuntal effect and not just horror. In the future if I were to re-do this task I would make images consistent and also remove the titles at the bottom of the screen so the audience have a chance to establish what is what.

Analysing TV episodes using theory's

Analysing- the Simpsons season 6 episode 1

Roland Barthes-

Enigma/Hermeneutic codes: Bart see’s ned burying something and we hear screaming however we don’t see what was buried which keep the audience in the dark about what has happened or happened.

Action codes: the Simpsons getting a pool is an example of an action code another example of an action code is when Bart breaks his leg.

Multi strand narrative series: the episode does contain multi strand narratives as there are many problems such as it’s very hot and they had a pool temporarily and then after wanted to get one for the back garden.

Linear or Non-linear pattern: linear the episode follows an A-B style narrative as it is in chronological order. Saying what happens in steps of taking place e.g. it was very hot, so they got a pool, Bart tried to show off and broke his leg, this is a basic example to show linear narratives.

Tavian Tomorrow-

Equilibrium: everyone is happy but the weather is very hot.

Disequilibrium: it’s very hot so the Simpsons have decided to get a pool however Bart tries to show and so he breaks his leg which means that throughout the hot summer he was not able to go swimming but was in him room forgotten by his friends and family who were enjoying the pool while we watched using binoculars.

New Equilibrium: Bart confront Ned about what had happened and asks about what he berried in the garden which lead to Ned admitting what he had done and everybody is that happy and balance is when restored again.

Vladimir Prop - The seven spheres of action

The villain: nelson can be considered the hero as he made Bart look at thing which made him fall and break his leg.

The donor: Lisa gives Bart a telescope

The helper: Lisa also helps in

The princess: Ned’s wife is the person who needed to be saved

The dispatcher: Bart set Lisa to go find out more information.

The hero: the hero is Bart although Lisa was the dispatcher Bart had to try to save Lisa but found the truth out when he helped her

Film noir

Research on film noir

Film noir consists of dark, moody and dramatic cinematography, the genre of film noir instantly conjures cinematic scenes in your mind of New York detectives.Film noir is from the French word "noir" translates to "black" or "dark," and film noir describes a style of film making rather than an actual film genre. At the heart of film noir is a dramatic story, often filled with crime and sexual scenarios. The lighting is sometimes either stark dark or light contrasts as are the dramatic shadowing effects known also as the chiaroscuro style; Chiaroscuro is a style of light and dark. One typical cliché and always notable scene type is the shadows of characters. an example

The poster of sin city is a very good example of film noir it uses a contrast of dark and light to show the genre of the film, the dark shadows used help the audience assume that there is danger and mystery however the white and lighter areas suggests that there is hope. the film poster has powers boothe as the in the central showing him as the main focus also his face consists of many plasters which suggests violence due to the use of plasters also it allows the audience to then assume that it is a typical genre of film noir which is crime. the light helps to give clues of many aspects such as where the film is set in the back a filler top light may have been used to show the setting as light on the apartment is added in order to show a suggestion of where it the film is set, also the tiles of the film "Sin City" helps us to understand that the film could perhaps also be set on in the city.

The trailer of the film uses lots of light and dark scenes in order to continue with the film noir, at 15.5 second of the trailer the scene is dark and is then lit up by the sirens and headlight of police cars tho allows the audience to identify the genre which is crime. Throughout the trailer many scenes of the characters are shown as still images showing a black and light grey outline of the character face along side the name which continues the theme of film noir but also tell the audience who and what the film will be about. at 48 seconds a scene of a man with long hair is used the left hand side of his face is lit up and the right hand side is left with a more natural form of light  which could be either created by the moon or recreated using stage lighting , also the left hand side of the face gets lighter due to the thunder and lighting used which makes the audience feel that there is danger but also some form of evil in the film as lighting can connote danger, pain and evil. The trailer uses a range of shots in order to portray different views and ideas of the character to the audience.

Stuart Hall

Stuart Hall

Stuart hall(1980) he discovered the theory of encoding and decoding , his theory is different from althusser in emphasizing more scope for diversity of response to media text.Halls argued that the dominant ideology is typically inscribed as the preferred reading in a media text. however this is not easily adopted by all readers ,some readers only take in what they see and not break down the image to understand any other meanings but the one shown by the news paper. dominant reading is what the creator intends for the audience to believe, the negotiable reading is an alternative reading that is completely opposite tot he writers intentions. Oppositional reading are a middle ground not being biased one side but understand both the dominant reading and negotiable reading and are 50/50.

News breakdown

Three seriously hurt as Boris bus on wrong route causes pile-up on first day of service

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/three-seriously-hurt-as-boris-bus-on-wrong-route-causes-pileup-on-first-day-of-service-8834134.html
Pile-up: the scene on Chelsea Bridge Road shows the wreckage after the crash involving a new Route Master bus (Picture: Nigel Howard)

The dominant reading of the article is to show that TFL is not efficient in what they do and have mean that an accident have been caused as the bus was on the wrong route also it would suggests that driver was not under clear  instructions. Another understanding of the image could be that the bus is not designed as well as anticipated which means that Boris huge spending on the bus was not a waste.

The oppositional reading is that new buses have been put in to London to help people have a more efficient and reliant bus service. Also to provide a quicker, easier and more welcoming form of transport which is ECO friendly.

The negotiable reading is that the new buses were put out to help Londoners gets around better, however the accident due to being on the wrong route can be an honest mistake and that there may have been some misunderstanding along the way.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene of a still image
Mise-en scene is the French word what means everything in the scene/frame. The mise-en scene is used in order to set the scene and setting, it allows audiences to one establish the genre but two it allows the audience to have a certain expectation based on the genre. The mise-en scene is broken down in several parts but can be paired up as each one is closely linked with another.

Costume & make up-
The image I am analysing today is the Avengers. The costumes used in the poster of the film are iconic Costumes such as iron man which is a very well-known character, another iconic character is Thor. Both Characters are wearing a costume which helps the audience to understand the genre of the film but also who they are. The makeup used throughout the poster is a black for of powder used to imitate soot on the Face to show they there has been some form of action which help the audience to identify the type of film.

Lighting & colour-
The lighting used it low-key lighting which has been used in order to show “dark times” which means that something bad has happened or is going to happened which is a typical story line for superhero movies. The colours used on iron man is a metallic red which suggests that he can be seen as futuristic due the metal suit that he is wearing, also the blue lights in his hand again show that he may be from the future as he is not holding a weapon. Again with Thor ,a metallic silver is used which creates an impression that he is from the future , the hammer that he uses make the audience feel that he could be from the past however as he does not have a gun.
Setting & props-
The setting of the film is based in a typical city location which tends to normally be New York. This helps the audience get a better understanding of what the film may be about and where the film will be set. A range of props have been used in order to help show what the genre of the film is , guns ,bow and arrow, shield and a hammer show that they film use weapon which suggests some form of action scene in order to attack or to defend something which helps strengthen the genre of the film.

Actors & body language/placement-
The actors used are well known actors, where some have stared in action films, such as Samuel L Jackson who stared in snakes on a plane which was also an action adventure film, Chris Hemsworth is also another example who came in Thor the movie which again was an action adventure film. This helps the audience again understand the genre of the film but also allow for a certain expectation due the actors and actress used based on previously films. The placement of characters is also very important, the placement of characters can allow a suggestion of importance in the film but also which character the film will be mainly orientated about.

media mise-en-scene comparison.

costumes and make up- the costume of all 3 films is different the first film is set in the 1970/80 where as grown up and the avengers is set in the current time period the costumes used helps indicate what genre the film maybe  for example the avengers characters are wearing super hero costumes which suggests what the film may be about. grown ups a scene where all of the character are wearing the same t-shirt suggests that there may be an aspect of sport in the film. the make up in avengers is used in order to replicate dust and debris on the face , where as in the conjuring the mother and father seem to have make up used n order to show stress, which helps in order to make the family look ordinary.

lighting and colour- through out the conjuring most scene are shown with low key lighting which suggests mystery and also a setting for a horror movie. The avengers has low key lighting which is similar to the conjuring which suggests that the film is about mystery of some form of dilemma. grown ups on the other hand is more made of high key. This suggests that the film is more happy which can give a suggestion of comedy. the colours used in the conjuring are very plan and not vibrant make the audience feel dull , the avengers alongside grown ups consists of more vibrant colours make the audience feel more happy and less fearful as they feel that by watching the film they will feel happy.

setting and props- the setting of the conjuring is in mainly shown to be in one place which is the house making audience , the avengers and grown ups on the other hand have more of a range showing different scenes which show different settings and a suggestion of what the film will be about and located. the props used in the conjuring are advanced electrical machines showing that hi tech machinery is being used for the came also scenes of how its used is also shown an example is when listening for noises in the cellar, the avenger uses a range or props such as weapons. the grown ups on the other hand has a range of props such as the basketball which suggests signs of sport.

actors & body language/placement - the actors in the conjuring were actors used in a previous successful horror film which was insidious, he was the main character in insidious and also the conjuring this meant we may have already had a fan base. in the avengers the placement of characters varied which suggested that importance of each character ran through out the film as no one character had more scenes then others. In grown up there are 5 main characters through out the film however more light is shown on adam sandler then the rest.

The language of analysis

Colour- The colour of the advert is a purple liquid this helps to give a suggestion of the flavour of the drink. Purple is associated with royalty. it symbolizes power, nobility, luxury and ambition. It conveys wealth and status. purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence , creativity , mystery and magic.

Framing- The image consists of one object which is the bottle of vitamin water but also an image of a person (50 cent), the image also contains some form of graphics some in the shapes of grapes but others types which are in lines and different type of styles that are presented behind and around which is used in order to make the product stand out.

Composition- The composition of the images are based on the rules of 2 thirds the vitamin is positioned on the left hand side of the images and the second of the image is of 50 cent which is an iconic person in the hip-hop industry.  The image of grapes is also added   to the bottle which is a representation of the flavour of the drink.

Size-There are two images that are used one is of the product showing what they are advertising and the second images is of 50 cent which is a shot from the waist up.

Type of shot- The image has no text only on the label of the product, the vitamin bottle is an example of a long shot as they whole images is presented in the final piece; in addition 50 cent is an example of medium close shot, as the image is taken from the waist onwards. The angle of the shot is a straight shot showing that there is no different between us and 50 cent and they we can all be on the same level by drinking this drink.

Subject matter- The subject of the photo is shared between 50 cent and the vitamin bottle.

Setting- The setting of the image is not clear , however the white background used cold connote purity but also clouds which again connotes that the product is something given by the gods , and that by drinking this drink that you can be unstoppable.

Lighting- The lighting of 50 cent is in monochrome and then the bottle is added which adds the colour of purple along with the graphics which are also in purple. The lighting seems to make the attention to the bottle as it stands out in purple, making the attention of the reader directed to the product.

Pose-The pose of the bottle is full shot showing the whole product.  The  pose of 50 cent is a side view of him, the facial expression seem that he seems to be more focused and concentrating more which gives emphasis of the what’s the product can do for you.

Media language- different aspects of mise-en-scene , facial expression on 50 cents face seems as if he is concentrating more focused and assertive. The clothing which is worn by 50 cent is a white tank top which could mean that they are trying to show that 50 cent is strong and that the drink also helps for this.

iPhone 5C analysis

IPhone 5C analysis
media language- The range of words is used in order to describe the iPhone to make it seem more luxurious then it is the words "simple, essential and capable " are used in order to make the new iPhone seem like it is needed by the audience the word "essential" show us this it also suggests that the phone is must have and they are stating it as if everyone should have one as they feel it is "essential". the word "essential is normally used in more serious situations such as for life skills e.g. it is essential to drink lots or water to survive, this is an example of how the word would be used however in this case as stated above is making the audience feel the it is a must have and similarly is a product essential for life.

Institution-the institution of the video is made and directed by apple, the purpose of the video is for marketing purposes to promote the new product that is coming out by apple. Also it is for publicity to create product awareness of the new product, the distribution of the product is distributed virally on the website or on TV advertisements. It has been done virally because it’s cheap and does not cost apple anything as it is on there on website, however TV adverts on the other hand is very costly but the benefits are that more people are able to view them as millions of people watch TV. The advert would be on TV pre-watershed as is  an advert showing a new product the iPhone 5C is aimed at lower budget so people within the B/C1 social demographic scale, whereas the iPhone 5S which is aimed at a higher market A/B. The advert is shown on commercial television e.g. ITV channel 4, channel 5. The video is a simulation of a daily task that a user would do when using the iPhone 5C it is also an example of exploitation as Apple explain the product in the advert as if the viewer has no understanding of the Apple "iPhone's".

Genre- the genre of the advert is to persuade and also inform the audience. The advert is designed to persuade the audience to take an interest in their product but also to actually want the product. Another aspect is to inform the audience about the product showing the audience that "new apple" showing that they are now catering more money than one type of people and have now created a new budget iPhone.

Representation-The advert uses the brilliant white throughout the whole of the advert, the white connotes purity and innocence, the product is shown on a white background which makes the product stand out and make it look like it’s a really good product that everyone should have. The product is not aimed at a certain gender. Throughout the advert the iPhone 5C is shown
Audience- the product is aimed at everyone but in particularly is aimed at the Asian Chinese market due to the bright colours and funky cases. This is as they like to be fashionable which is able to be done by the colours, also they like to have the latest technology. due to the high price that it’s safe to say that the product is also aimed at people who want to show they have money or have a luxurious life, also it is also the "budget iPhone" which means that its aimed at a lower market but in still towards a high social group.

ideology and values- the advert is made to make the phone seem more desirable then it really is ,it’s also made to seem as good as the iPhone 5S. The phone is described my an British and then American person , this shows that they are showing to the audience that the phone is from one a trust brand but two also something that people should buy , it seems that apple are trying to set a trend of some form with the colours and covers. Throughout the advert they say that the phone is based on "feature that people know and love” this shows the audience that they are big and trustworthy brand, and that many people use their products
Narrative- the story of the iPhone is given apple talk about the new changes of the product and they continue to talk about the changes that they have made about what apple have done. Also the new idea of using plastic is also impact, as they say "unapologetically plastic" showing that they are not sorry for tarnishing the brand name but are proud for what they have done. The production of the iPhone 5C is shown through showing the multiple stages from start to finish showing how proud apple are about the new product. in addition  the description of the iPhone is shown as luxurious as each stage is spoken about at each stage not only saying what’s happening but talking about the product of why they have done what they have done. This has been done in order to attract the audience showing that apple may have changed and realised that they should target a new type of market. Finally through the advert features of the iPhone have been shown showing different aspects of the phone but also the new ios7, showing the new features but also the design which allows people to feel part of the experience and also be able to keep up with apples latest updates and product.

The Conjuring

The conjuring

The film genre is horror as the codes and convection's show this. An example of one is that there some kind of investigators that are involved in possession as they say “show us a sign that you want to communicate” this shows that they are trying to communicate with the house or someone in the room not an actual person which also suggests a sign to do with the super natural. The second scene of the trailer shows us an introduction, of the characters that were previously “hunting”  for the ghost and now explaining who they are and what they do giving a clearer understanding for the audience, they say they called "ghost hunters, paranormal researchers , but we prefer to be know simply as Ed and Loraine Warren" this shows the audience what the film is about and also their role in the film which attracts the audience straight away as it straight away tell the view what the trailer is showing and whats the films going to be about.the next scene is the first piece of text that we see "based on the true story of the warren" is also another method to attract the audience, combined with the previous scene this really helps to attract views as they take the trailer more seriously and allows the audience to be more engaged. The music also helps engage the audience as the music change the change changes also for example at 30" the music sped up and the scenes, changed in the same speed showing pictures of skulls crosses which are example of key conventions to do with horror and super natural and help to identify the genre of the film. A grand father clock stuck on the time "3:07 am " shows us also more signs of supernatural behaviors as it is consider the hour of the devil the grandfather clock on the other hand connotes mystery and old age suggesting a time of when the film was set. the scene start to slow down and then speed up showing several events of action in the film which makes the viewer jump and pay more attention getting them hooked on. "from the director of saw and insidious" this shows that the film has been directed by a well know director who's stated two successful films as an example of the films that the director has done again encouraging the audience to watch the film as they may have enjoyed the previously stated films. The last scene is of a music box which is seen as innocent and do with kids also giving a bit more away.
